Often times we find ourselves overwhelmed by all the barriers to our success. We get discouraged because it seems like an obstacle after obstacle is throw at us. It may even seem like life is just creating circumstances to prevent us from getting what we want.

Somehow, it’s just a little too easy to blame everyone and everything around us, but perhaps we should be looking in the mirror. Wait! Could we actually be subconsciously creating the drama and the circumstances that are holding us back? Are we actually afraid of succeeding?

Crazy thoughts? No. I spent almost a year pondering and planning on launching this blog. I think I was actually afraid that no one would read it. Or worse, they would read and tell me it sucked. How did I get unstuck? How did I get out of my own way?

A simple exercise and a good book.

Take a blank sheet of paper. Write down all the things you have done and decisions you have made to get in your own way. Then write down all the fears that made you act and decide that way.

Pour a glass of wine (or tea). Take a sip. Close your eyes for a few minutes. Picture what it would look like to reach your goals. Feel it, smell it, taste it. Then open your eyes, take another sip, and re-read your list of obstacles and fears. Crumple up the paper and throw it away. Finish your glass.

Set an intention that you will not be ruled by your fears. You are stronger and tougher than they are. Be aware that fears and doubts will creep into your head, but they are the enemy. Shoot them down. Crush them! Decide at this moment that you will succeed. Keep the vision of what it looks like, feels like and even smells like at the forefront of your brain.

Then read this book. Unfu*k Yourself by Gary John Bishop. Published in 2016, he started a wave of personal empowerment. Do not read if you are easily offended. It’s not for you. Only read if you are ready to wake up, get out of your own way, and live your best life.
