I’m often asked what are my favorite running shoes? This is a difficult answer because often the person is really asking for advice on what shoes they should buy. My favorite shoes that I have been running in for many years is the Brooks Transcend. This was previously the Brooks Trance but when they made them more cushioned, they changed the name.

Think of the Transcend as the big sister to the Brooks Adrenaline GTS. The GTS stands for “Go To Shoe” because it fits just about everyone and is a great running shoe if you just need light stability. This is the shoe my daughter Caitlin runs in.

The Brooks Transcend is one step up from the GTS. It is a stability shoe with lots of cushion. I look at it as win: win! The stability is there in the form of holistic guide rails that supports your body to keep your knees straight when you are running. Think of them as bumpers in a bowling alley. If you need the support, it’s there; but if you don’t it will not overcorrect your stride. Then they added superior cushioning. The cushioning helps on impact then propels you forward on toe-off. This keeps your body moving in the right direction without taking a beating. Stability and cushioning mean total comfort for those long runs.

Marathon season means I have to have two pairs that I am rotating. I’m happy that they always make at least two colors so I can keep them straight without having to mark them A and B. I rotate every other day.

They do run true to size but remember to buy them at least a half size larger than your regular daily shoes. Your feet swell on the run!

For completeness and for my running junkie friends, the Transcend is a 10mm drop stability shoe with the most cushioning in its class. Very friendly for long distance runners with a medium to low arch. They are currently on the Transcend 6 and cost is MSRP of $160.
